How to Choose Hotel Towels: A Practical GSM Guide
October 14, 2026
Towels are one of the most visible textiles in a guest room, and one of the most heavily laundered. Choosing the right specification balances guest comfort against drying time, laundry cost and replacement rate.
What GSM tells you
GSM (grams per square metre) measures the weight of the fabric. As a rule of thumb:
- 400–500 GSM — lighter towels that dry quickly; common in hospitals, fitness centres and budget hotels.
- 500–600 GSM — the hospitality standard; a good balance of softness and drying time.
- 600–700 GSM — plush, heavier towels for upscale properties and spas. They feel luxurious but take longer to dry.
Yarn and construction
Ring-spun cotton yarns are smoother and stronger than open-end yarns, and they shed less lint. Dobby or cam borders add weight where the towel wears first and help the towel keep its shape. A cotton–polyester blend in the ground yarn can improve durability and reduce drying time for high-volume laundries.
Colour and logo
White remains the easiest choice to launder and replace. If you want a branded look, an embroidered logo or a woven border is more durable than a printed design.
Plan the par level
Most properties keep three to four sets per room: one in the room, one in the laundry, one on the shelf and one in reserve. Ordering to an agreed specification makes it easy to replace worn towels with an exact match.
