Six Ways to Extend the Life of Your Linens
September 16, 2026
Linens wear out through washing, drying and handling. A few simple habits can add many cycles to the life of sheets and towels.
1. Break in new linens
Wash new textiles before first use to remove finishes and pre-shrink the fabric evenly.
2. Use the right chemistry
Excess alkali and chlorine weaken cotton fibres. Work with your chemical supplier to dose correctly for your water and soil levels.
3. Don't over-dry
Over-drying is one of the biggest causes of fibre damage and shrinkage. Remove linens while they still hold a little moisture.
4. Stop misuse
Towels used as cleaning rags or floor mats wear out quickly and are often stained beyond recovery. Provide proper cleaning cloths for staff.
5. Rest and rotate
Allow laundered linens to rest on the shelf before reuse and rotate stock so the same pieces are not always used first.
6. Buy to a consistent specification
Mixing fabrics and weights in one wash causes uneven wear. Ordering to the same specification keeps your stock consistent.
